What’s The Issue

Actions VS Words

I’ve been obsessed with learning what it means to live a good life for the past few years. I’ve read a lot of self-help books and novels that tell me how to do it, and this one rule keeps coming up. Being able to recite a rule does not mean that you have incorporated it into your personality.

Put these guidelines into practice every day to integrate them and progress toward becoming a good person. You are hypocritical if you are aware of something but actively or passively engage in the opposite behavior.

We may believe we are wiser by keeping information and possibly sharing it with others, but if we choose not to put it into practice, we are even more foolish.

This is a fundamental lesson that I have repeatedly had to learn. At one point in my life, I believed that having a basic understanding of these rules and principles made me a wiser person. I secretly regarded myself as superior to those who did not read the books I did or comprehend the information I did.

But the truth was that because I was so proud of my unearned wisdom, I was always the fool. I felt like an imposter whenever I found myself repeating what I had read to other people because I did not understand what it meant to truly practice what I preached.

I obsessively read the same self-help books over and over because I believed that in order to suppress the negative emotions, I needed to read more books and learn more information. When the answer was always in front of me, I attempted to intellectualize to drown out the thoughts and feelings simply put the information I had learned to use in my life. Let the outcome speak for itself.

We can either look around to find someone to blame, or we can look within to see if we contributed to the problem. What are the advantages of selecting the former? We allow ourselves to be victims and give up responsibility. We can identify as innocent, blameless sufferers. We are able to give ourselves a pat on the back and also receive support and sympathy from other people because we have been subjected to unjustified suffering.

Many people are exploited and taken advantage of. It is true that many people are real victims of oppressive and malicious forces that use violence and intimidation…
